While mere mortals will most likely have to wait until May to get at Cupcake (probably even stooping so low as to refer to it as Android 1.5, those commoners), the proud, good-looking possessors of Android Dev Phones can get at the update right this instant from HTC's website. Naturally, we'd assume somebody's going to figure out how to get these images onto rooted G1s before long, but we wouldn't want to over estimate the intelligence or temerity of the proletariat.
It may be more commonly known as the T-Mobile G1, but underneath the carrier’s branding the first Android-powered smartphone to market is really the HTC Dream. Now buyers in Singapore and Australia will get the chance to pick up the device, through carriers Singtel and Optus respectively, with pretty much the same functionality as we’ve come to expect from it.
That means the same 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, sliding up to reveal a five-row QWERTY keyboard, plus both 3G and WiFi connectivity and a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus. Of course, what most people will be more excited about is the Dream’s OS, and the device will come with the latest Android build plus access to the Android Market for app downloads.
No word on official pricing from HTC as yet, but at least one of the carriers has made their move. Optus will be charging between AU$3 and AU$51 per month for the Dream, depending on which plan you select; they range from AU$59 to AU$129 per month, with both 12- and 24-month contracts available.

HTC, RIM, Palm, Nokia and Panasonic are among multiple cellphone manufacturers against whom a Texas company, Saxon Innovations, have filed complaints regarding alleged patent violations. The case, which the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has decided to investigate following a vote on Thursday, suggests that various products from the companies use intellectual property first filed in three patents by AMD, and which was subsequently bought by Saxon in July 2007. If the ITC finds in favor of the complaint, the manufacturers could be barred from importing their devices.
The three patents, all granted in the 1990s, include a method of monitoring a keypad with activity-based activation, an apparatus and method for disabling interrupt marks in processors or the like, and a device and method for interprocessor communication by using mailboxes owned by processor devices. Specifically cited devices include the Nokia N73, which Saxon claim violates two of the three patents, the Nokia N95, which violates the third, together with the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl, violating two of the patents, and the Palm Treo 700p, which also violates two patents.
None of the companies involved have publicly commented on the case. The ITC will now hold a hearing on the complaint, with an investigation completion date usually established within the next 45 days.
HTC has launched an upgrade to its popular Touch handset, the Touch 3G. Sorting a 2.8 inch touchscreen TFT, the phone is powered by a 528MHz processor and is fitted with 192MB RAM and 256MB ROM- expandable via microSD. Running on Moblie 6.1 and the proprietary TouchFLO navigation system, it boasts of a 3.15-megapixel camera, built in GPS, A-GPS, Pocket Office, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
