Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 Silver

Reaction to the rumored X2 pictures leaked this far has been lukewarm at best, but hold up -- it's looking a whole lot different (and arguably better) in silver. We can certainly buy that this is dead-on real, since... well, it looks real, and also because the X1's also available in both shades. We're still not convinced it outshines its predecessor for sheer sex appeal, but an 8.1 megapixel camera upgrade is hard to argue with, isn't it? Anyhow, with this many units seemingly floating around in the wild, let's hope we're not too far off from an official announcement.

Sony Ericsson S001 with huge AMOLED display & 8.1MP autofocus camera

Sony Ericsson might not be having such financial troubles if they deigned to release handsets like the SE S001 in Europe and the US. Freshly announced for Japanese network KDDI, the Sony Ericsson S001 has a huge 3.3-inch 480 x 854 AMOLED display, an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and smile-shutter control, mobile TV, high-speed internet and GPS, and is making me sob with envy.
It’s not like the S001 wouldn’t work outside of Japan: Sony Ericsson have seen fit to give it GSM/CDMA connectivity, allowing KDDI’s “global passport” roaming system to work. There’s also Bluetooth, 1-Seg digital TV, electronic payments, preinstalled navigation software and a full internet browser.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan, you can pick up the Sony Ericsson S001 on KDDI in black, pink and green with gold trim. But don’t expect the rest of us to be anything but bitter about it.

Politics, not technology, did for the PSP phone

No PlayStation phone then? There's a surprise.
It's not hard to see through Sony Ericsson's line about the technical specs not being high enough. It's face-saving spin designed to distract attention from Sony's basic problem with Sony Ericsson's entire existence.
There's been no shortage of signs that Sony is unhappy with its relationship with Sony Ericsson, and we expect the PSP phone has been denied due to Sony's fear of repeating the alleged "strategic mistake" it made when it gave up the Walkman brand for their line of phones.
There have been long-standing rumours that Sony wants to buy out Sony Ericsson and enter the phone business on its own terms. Giving up the cornerstone PlayStation brand to someone you might want to buy isn't something you do ahead of the deal.
A PlayStation phone makes a lot of sense and it's not hard to see why Sony would very much like to make one - but it can't until the politics are sorted out.
And who knows how long that's going to take?

Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot™ Camera Phone – Luscious Red

Do more than just talk with the multi-functional C902 Cyber-shot™ camera phone. Packed with features, this device has a 5.0 megapixel camera with Auto Focus, Face Detection and a built-in xenon flash with red-eye correction. It's also easy to share your photos with friends using picture messaging6 or posting them to a blog.9 In addition, this phone is a full-functioning music player with a built in FM tuner. Also available in Swift Black.

5 Megapixel camera
Stylish and slim with an innovative design, C902 gives you a true Cyber-shot™ camera experience with 5 megapixel camera. 16x digital zoom with auto focus, an image and video stabilizer, Photo flash, BestPic™ technology with light, Auto rotate, Face detection technology and Photo fix are few of great features included. All these come together for high quality pictures. Photo flash will turn on automatically for pictures and you can now use light with BestPic™ technology and when recording videos. A picture can be easily shared with friends and family via picture messaging6, email9 or blog9. Pictures can also be transferred to another phone or computer using any available transfer method, such as Bluetooth® technology3 or USB cable. The camera is protected by a lens cover and the horizontal user interface allows for easier camera handling.

8 Camera touch keys
If you need to adjust the camera settings, onscreen touch keys appear above and below the camera viewfinder. They act as shortcuts to commonly used camera features such as shoot modes, scenes, time and more.

Face detection technology
The camera brings an off-center face into focus if there are people in the picture. The camera will find and focus on a face and make it look sharp. No more blurred faces on your pictures!

BestPic™ technology with light
A unique function for Sony Ericsson camera imaging. Taking a single picture or even a burst of pictures does not always catch the moment, which may have been just before or just after the camera key was pressed. BestPic™ technology is designed to solve this problem. Press the camera key half way down and the camera starts capturing pictures. Press the key fully down, and nine pictures appear automatically. The pictures range from left (just before pressing the camera key fully down) to center (camera key fully down) to right (just after pressing the camera key fully down). The center picture is the default picture, but not necessarily the best one. Browse the picture series and save the best pictures. BestPic™ technology has been updated and can now be used together with light.

Auto rotate
Capturing a portrait photo with a horizontal camera usually results in a picture that must be rotated when viewed. Auto rotate registers picture orientation when the picture is taken, whether in portrait or landscape mode, and saves this information with the picture. When viewed, the picture appears as the orientation with which it was taken.

Photo tags
Navigate through your captured photos and thousands of downsized photos transferred from your computer. View captured photos and video clips in an intuitive timeline view. Play animated slide shows with music and different moods. Tag your photos to find them faster. The built-in sensor in the camera ensures that all photos are rotated correctly.

Motion Control Gaming
Play games on your phone in a new way with Motion Control Gaming technology. You can move your C902 to control gaming functions in a similar way as a game controller. Tilt the phone forwards, backwards, left or right to accelerate, decelerate, turn left or turn right. Additionally, with Java™, users can download9 new games and skill levels to further enhance their entertainment experience.

Sony Ericsson G705

The Sony Ericsson G705 is an HSDPA capable 3.5G slider phone with GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera and built-in WiFi, due for general release during Q4 2008.

It's not a top-of-the-range handset, but the presence of GPS marks it out as being something other than a midrange device. Perhaps what Sony Ericsson are trying to achieve is a mass market GPS phone, and certainly it seems to meet all the requirements.. except for one.

You see, the problem with the G705 (and indeed some other recent Sony Ericsson releases) is that it's quite dull. Although it's a tidily designed handset, it's hardly sexy. And Sony Ericsson's new naming convention is awfully unmemorable. G705? Try to remember the handset model tomorrow without looking it up. If this was an LG or Samsung handset then you can bet that they would have thought of some snazzy marketing name for it.

There are a few different variants of the G705, but the standard European one is a quad-band GSM phone with UMTS 2100, GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA data, plus WiFi, stereo Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The G705 has a 3.2 megapixel camera with a photo/video light (it appears to be fixed focus), there's a video calling camera too. Video clips and stills photos can be uploaded directly to a blog. The G705 can automatically geotag photographs with the current GPS coordinates.

The display is a 2.4" QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) panel in 262,000 colours. Unlike some other G-Series phones, the display is not touch-sensitive, which is a shame because that would be a useful thing to have with the G705's built in Wayfinder satellite navigation application. The G705 supports Google Maps too.

There's a media player plus an FM radio, and all the usual Sony Ericsson multimedia enhancements that you would expect. Usefully, the G705 comes with a 1GB memory card in the standard sales package.

The web browser is a little bit more sophisticated than usual, with one click access to Google and the ability to sense the orientation of the display and automatically swap between wide and tall formats. The G705 also has an email client, and can support Microsoft ActiveSync and instant messaging. There are a number of other personal information management applications too.

There are a couple of variants of the Sony Ericsson G705 - the G705u incorporates UMA support to allow VOIP (i.e. Internet telephone calls), and this will be exclusive to Orange. There is also an American version of the G705 which has UMTS 800 / 1900 / 2100 MHz and HSUPA which allows for high-speed uploads, this will be available during Q1 2009. In Sony Ericsson's old naming system, this would have been called the G705a.

The Sony Ericsson G705 weighs just 98 grams and has up to 4 hours talktime and 14 days standby time on 3G, 10 hours talktime and 16 days standby time on GSM. Standard colours are "Silky Gold" and "Majestic Black". The G705u will be available in "Luminous Black".
