Nokia Comes with Music US launch smartly pushed back to 2010

Not that most Americans could care, but Nokia is pushing back the US launch of its DRM-laden Comes with Music service into 2010. CWM, you'll recall, is Nokia's "free" all-you-can-eat music service that bundles the 12-18 month music subscription cost into the inflated handset price -- although like any DRM music scheme, solutions already exist to break the CWM shackles. The delay is probably a wise move considering the weak state of Nokia's US partnerships required to offset consumer costs, lukewarm response to its latest handsets, and the fact that most US consumers share a broad distaste for DRM music. We'd rather see Nokia launch late but with a compelling proposition than launch now in blind adherence to a timeline.

Nokia's E75

Nokia's E75 S60 QWERTY is now shipping according to a feverish Nokia press release. For Espoo, that leading "E" stands for businEss so this slider is all about corporate eMail -- a first handset to ship with Nokia's new eMail user interface -- as well as getting you connected to your personal accounts from Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail. Unfortunately, the decent quad-band GSM / EDGE and dual-band HSPDA data, WiFi, microSD expansion, 3.2 megapixel camera, and a-GPS specs are offset by that puny 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) display. For our money, we'll be holding out for the 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel N97 QWERTY slider just peeped in the FCC

Nokia's 7205 Intrigue for Verizon now available

Right on schedule, the Nokia 7205 Intrigue for Verizon Wireless is online and ready for purchase. Price is exactly in-line with expectations as well, at $180 with a two-year contract, plus a handy $50 rebate to bring it down to $130. Design-wise the flip phone is already a long ways ahead of the frumpy Nokia 6205, at a mere 0.55-inches thick, but there's nothing much here to get Nokia's GSM customers jealous -- other than that subsidized price, of course. The handset has a 2 megapixel camera, A2DP Bluetooth, a fancy new homescreen (including Habitat Mode), PMOLED display on the back cover, and a microSD slot.

Nokia 5030, 5330, and 5730 XpressMusics

We know that the shindig Nokia's putting on tomorrow has something to do with music, so it's certainly within the realm of possibility that we'd see some new XpressMusic handsets there, and indeed, All About Phones seems to have scooped the goods. It looks like we'll be treated to no fewer than three models -- all Xpress-branded, naturally -- starting on the low end with the 5030 candybar. This one eschews XpressMusic for the less audiophile-sounding "XpressRadio" name, pimping its in-built FM radio support and a large, squarish speaker around back at a crazy low price of €40 ($51) unsubsidized. Moving one rung up the range is the 5330 XpressMusic slider, packing a 3.5mm jack, some sort of special light effects for the ravers in the audience, and 24 hours of listening time; it'll be available in the third quarter for €160 ($204). Finally, we have the rumored 5730 (pictured) -- the only of the three to run S60 and lay claim to a genuine smartphone title. This one follows in the E75's footsteps by packing both a numeric and a landscape QWERTY slide, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel cam, HSDPA, and GPS, but the most interesting new feature here might be the "Xpress Home Screen" which exposes your loaded media right from the phone's -- you guessed it -- home screen. This one should hit in the second quarter for €280 ($357) and will be offered in a Comes With Music version in some countries. How's about killing off DRM while you're at it, Nokia?

Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic

There was a bit of a false alarm at the flagship stores yesterday -- Nokia's New York and Chicago stores got inventory, but didn't start selling the 5800 right away, causing much anguish in the hearts of American plectrum lovers and our very own Chris Ziegler. Well, all has been rectified, and now you can pick up Nokia's touchscreen pioneer, the 5800 XpressMusic, for $399, unlocked and unsubsidized. If you aren't so much into retail stores you can head to Nokia's online store, though the phone is still inexplicably listed as "pre-order" there -- we're sure things will be rectified soon enough.

Nokia N75

In the run-up to Mobile World Congress it seems like there’s nothing but cellphones around; latest leak is an old favorite, the Nokia E75, which has already appeared twice (first here, and then here) and by now is well overdue a launch. There’s not much we’ve not seen about this side-sliding 3G smartphone, but given how distinctive it is among Nokia’s current line-up we love it all the same.
Aside from the QWERTY keyboard and the separate number pad, the Nokia E75 has a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, both HSDPA and WiFi connectivity and A-GPS. There’s also a microSD slot with support for SDHC cards (presumably up to 32GB), a 3.5mm standard headset jack and the 60 3rd Edition FP2 OS.
Considering how finished the handset looks, it can’t be long before an announcement gets made. We’re betting a farm (not the farm; we need the chickens) that the E75 is one of Nokia’s special guests at MWC in less than two weeks time, at which point we’ll hopefully get a full spec list, availability and pricing details.

T-Mobile have announced the new Shadow, by HTC, a compact smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.1, a slide-out SureType-style 20-button keyboard, WiFi and support for T-Mobile’s HotSpot VoIP service. Available today, in “white mint” and “black burgundy“, the T-Mobile Shadow has a QVGA touchscreen and a 2-megapixel camera.
In fact the Shadow is the first Windows Mobile phone to support the T-Mobile HotSpot service, which offers unlimited VoIP calls over WiFi (with the relevant mobile plan, obviously). The T-Mobile Shadow is priced at $199.99, with a new two-year contract.
T-Mobile have also announced the Nokia 7510, a flip-phone with a 2-megapixel camera and WiFi. It, too, can use the HotSpot VoIP service, and is available now. The Nokia 7510 is priced at $49.99, with a new two-year contract.
Press Release:
Share Life’s Fun Moments With the Launch of the New T-Mobile Shadow
Latest “All-in-One” Device Features Support for T-Mobile Unlimited HotSpot Calling, a More Powerful Processor and a Curvier Design
BELLEVUE, Wash. — Jan. 28, 2009 — Today, T-Mobile USA, Inc., announced the availability of the new T-Mobile® Shadow™. Featuring a more rounded and compact design with two new color options, support for T-Mobile Unlimited HotSpot Calling, and increased processing power, the new Shadow is the perfect device for sharing life’s special moments.
Available exclusively from T-Mobile, the Shadow is designed to significantly reduce the complexity often associated with many feature-rich devices, while maintaining the powerful calling, messaging and picture-sharing capabilities people crave to keep them connected. The Shadow is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 and is the first Windows-based phone to provide support for T-Mobile’s Unlimited HotSpot Calling service,* which provides great mobile coverage at home and unlimited nationwide calling from Wi-Fi networks, including T-Mobile HotSpot locations across the country.
With a navigation wheel, a slide-out 20-key QWERTY keypad with predictive text, and a large, vibrant screen, the Shadow was built to make popular calling, messaging and picture-sharing features quick and easy to use. The radiant display lets you view and share photos taken with the 2.0 megapixel camera, surf the Web and watch movies on the crisp QVGA display. The Wi-Fi Web browser allows you to feed your discussions in real time, while the enhanced multimedia capabilities provide an entertaining, top-screen way to share your favorite music.
“The T-Mobile Shadow provides customers with a variety of ways to easily stay connected — whether it’s calling their loved ones with one of T-Mobile’s unlimited calling services, e-mailing friends or sharing family photos,” said Travis Warren, director of device marketing, T-Mobile USA. “We’re excited to bring a new, very attractive and stylish design and two new colors to the T-Mobile Shadow lineup.”
The T-Mobile Shadow, designed and manufactured by HTC, comes ready with a more powerful processor for faster access to the information you need. The new Shadow also features a larger battery for more talk time, an improved photo album to easily view and share photos, and enhanced messaging capabilities, such as threaded short message service (SMS) and copy/paste functionality.
The T-Mobile Shadow is available in two fashionable colors, white mint and black burgundy, at select T-Mobile retail stores, partner stores and online at www.t-mobile.com.
* Unlimited nationwide Wi-Fi calling requires Unlimited HotSpot Calling mobile plan, broadband Internet connection and wireless router. Nokia N75 appears in better quality leaked photos

It’s been a few months since we first saw the Nokia N75, complete with its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but now the latest unannounced Nseries smartphone is back in some higher-resolution pictures. Full spec details on the E75 are still scarce, but it’s believed to have 3G, WiFi and a 3.2-megapixel camera.
The display measures 2.4-inches and is non-touchscreen, and it looks to be flanked by what could be proximity and/or light sensors. Since there’s no touchscreen to shut off (as the iPhone does to save your cheek making accidental button-presses), the former could be used to activate the display if the N75 is taken away from the face mid-call, such as to check a calendar entry or contact.
No word on availability, but with Mobile World Congress fast approaching it’s entirely possible that Nokia could debut the N75 there. SlashGear will of course be attending the show, so we’ll bring you all the announcements.

Nokia N97 pre-order suggests March 31st UK release

UK online retailer Play.com have begun to accept pre-orders for the Nokia N97, suggesting a release date for the touchscreen smartphone of March 31st 2009. The handset, which is supplied SIM-free and unlocked, is priced at £479.99 ($704); only the white version is currently listed. Nokia themselves have not yet confirmed an official release date, only that the N97 will launch in the first half of 2009, nor have they priced the device.
As well as a touchscreen and the latest version of the S60 OS, the N97 has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and a dual-LED flash, a full QWERTY keyboard, GPS and WiFi. Since Play.com is a UK site, this particular N97 has Euro-spec 3G, using the 900/1900/2100MHz bands, rather than the North America-specific 850/1900/2100MHz bands.
It’s not unusual for retailers to put up unconfirmed release dates based either on tenuous supplier information or mere guesstimates, however, so we’d take this information with a pinch of salt. The N97 is available for pre-order elsewhere, such as Expansys, but Play is one of the first retailers to suggest both pricing and availability.

HTC, Nokia, RIM & Palm accused of cellphone patent violations

HTC, RIM, Palm, Nokia and Panasonic are among multiple cellphone manufacturers against whom a Texas company, Saxon Innovations, have filed complaints regarding alleged patent violations. The case, which the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has decided to investigate following a vote on Thursday, suggests that various products from the companies use intellectual property first filed in three patents by AMD, and which was subsequently bought by Saxon in July 2007. If the ITC finds in favor of the complaint, the manufacturers could be barred from importing their devices.
The three patents, all granted in the 1990s, include a method of monitoring a keypad with activity-based activation, an apparatus and method for disabling interrupt marks in processors or the like, and a device and method for interprocessor communication by using mailboxes owned by processor devices. Specifically cited devices include the Nokia N73, which Saxon claim violates two of the three patents, the Nokia N95, which violates the third, together with the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl, violating two of the patents, and the Palm Treo 700p, which also violates two patents.
None of the companies involved have publicly commented on the case. The ITC will now hold a hearing on the complaint, with an investigation completion date usually established within the next 45 days.
