Sprint Motorola i365IS

Sprint have announced the Motorola i365IS, where the “IS” stands for “Intrinsically Safe”. According to Sprint, the i365IS “is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to ignite fuel and cause a fire or explosion” and is safe to use in areas containing flammable gasses, vapors or dust. Personally, I’d like any cellphone I use to be incapable of exploding, but maybe that’s too much to ask. As well as promising not to go supernova in your front pocket, the i365IS has push-to-talk (PTT), military-spec ruggedization and Bluetooth.
You’re not getting a high-definition screen ideal for the latest ripped DivX movie - in fact 130 x 130 with 64k colors is your lot - but there’s a speakerphone, MMS, embedded GPS and multi-line support. The i365IS supports all the latest PTT services, including Group Connect, International Direct Connect (well, if by International you mean Mexico and Canada) and short-range non-cellular Direct TalkSM.
The Motorola i365IS is seemingly not yet available from Sprint, though the basic non-IS i365 is priced at around $90 with a new two-year agreement. Sprint haven’t announced availability or pricing for the new handset yet.

Android-based HTC Dream

It may be more commonly known as the T-Mobile G1, but underneath the carrier’s branding the first Android-powered smartphone to market is really the HTC Dream. Now buyers in Singapore and Australia will get the chance to pick up the device, through carriers Singtel and Optus respectively, with pretty much the same functionality as we’ve come to expect from it.
That means the same 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, sliding up to reveal a five-row QWERTY keyboard, plus both 3G and WiFi connectivity and a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus. Of course, what most people will be more excited about is the Dream’s OS, and the device will come with the latest Android build plus access to the Android Market for app downloads.
No word on official pricing from HTC as yet, but at least one of the carriers has made their move. Optus will be charging between AU$3 and AU$51 per month for the Dream, depending on which plan you select; they range from AU$59 to AU$129 per month, with both 12- and 24-month contracts available.
Official HTC Dream specifications:
3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with HVGA (320 X 480 pixel) resolution.
Customisable Home screen with instant Email, text message and IM notifications.
Full 5-row QWERTY keyboard.
One-touch access to Google Search, mobile Internet services - Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps & Calendar.
3G/2100MHz
Wi-Fi technology with seamless transition to open networks.
Android Market™ with access to a variety of applications and media downloads.
3.2 megapixel color camera with auto focus.
microSD™ (SD 2.0 compatible) expansion slot up to 8GB.

Samsung SyncMaster U70 7-inch USB

Quite a bit smaller than the usual Samsung SyncMaster displays we see, but this new U70 screen is aiming at the desktop companion market rather than trying to replace your primary monitor. In fact the SyncMaster U70 is just 7-inches, running at 800 x 480 resolution, and connecting to your PC via USB.
That puts it up against various rivals, from Nanovision’s MIMO range, through Century Japan’s offerings and all the way to join Buffalo as a mainstream brand edging in on the niche. First glance suggests that Samsung have used some of their digital photo frame expertise to at least make the SyncMaster U70 look great; you could easily mistake it for a standalone picture viewer.
Compatible with various forms of Windows (though not Mac OS X, sadly), with a 400:1 contrast ratio, 30ms response time and 200 cd/m2 brightness, the U70 gets its power through the USB connection. No word on pricing or availability as yet.

Samsung Acme i8910

Images purporting to be of a new touchscreen handset, the Samsung Acme i8910, have leaked, together with word that the device is set for launch at Mobile World Congress later this month. The Acme i8910 is believed to be an 8-megapixel cameraphone with specifications similar to those of the Samsung Omnia, together with either 8GB or 16GB of storage, GPS and DivX playback.
Other rumored specifications include an HDMI output, WiFi connectivity (which we’d assume would go along with 3G), a 3.5mm headphone socket and is DLNA compatibility. Going from the pictures, there looks to be a front-facing camera for video calling, too, plus volume controls on the left-hand side.
What we don’t know, so far, is what OS the Samsung Acme i8910 runs. Obviously the Omnia i900 uses Windows Mobile 6.1, but Samsung have also discussed releasing an Android-based device in Q2 2009, with some expecting it to be announced at MWC. There would potentially need to be some button changes, though, from the three front-panel softkeys shown in these images.

Nokia N75

In the run-up to Mobile World Congress it seems like there’s nothing but cellphones around; latest leak is an old favorite, the Nokia E75, which has already appeared twice (first here, and then here) and by now is well overdue a launch. There’s not much we’ve not seen about this side-sliding 3G smartphone, but given how distinctive it is among Nokia’s current line-up we love it all the same.
Aside from the QWERTY keyboard and the separate number pad, the Nokia E75 has a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, both HSDPA and WiFi connectivity and A-GPS. There’s also a microSD slot with support for SDHC cards (presumably up to 32GB), a 3.5mm standard headset jack and the 60 3rd Edition FP2 OS.
Considering how finished the handset looks, it can’t be long before an announcement gets made. We’re betting a farm (not the farm; we need the chickens) that the E75 is one of Nokia’s special guests at MWC in less than two weeks time, at which point we’ll hopefully get a full spec list, availability and pricing details.

T-Mobile Samsung Memoir T929

Images, features and technical details of the upcoming T-Mobile Samsung Memoir T929 have leaked. The touchscreen device, which is expected to launch on T-Mobile come February 25th priced at $299, is the US version of the European Samsung Pixon, and has an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 240 x 400 display and, if the specs are to be believed, support for high-speed UMTS HSDPA.
Comparing the leaked details of the US handset, below, to what we know of the European model, they certainly seem legitimate. One point of concern is the data speeds the T929 supports: the technical specifications say UMTS, while the features list only mentions EDGE. GPS is also omitted, though the Memoir is expected to have it.
While T-Mobile USA’s 3G network is still in its roll-out stage, and not as pervasive as rival carrier’s high-speed coverage, the company has committed to releasing multiple HSDPA-capable devices in 2009 and there’s no reason to believe that they’d artificially limit the Samsung Memoir T929. For confirmation, though, we may have to wait until later this month.

Sharp Japan launched new Aquos D energy-saving LCDs

Sharp Japan dished out a trio of low end LCDs, a new series of low power consumption and environmental friendly Aqous D lineup in 20, 26 and 32-inch HDTV displays with 1366×768 pixel resolution panel.

The new Aqous LCDs are capable of 450 cd/m2 luminance output, the 32-inch is better equipped in contrast department, rated at 3000:1 contrast as oppose to its smaller siblings with 1500:1 rating. Other features included analog/digital tuners for Japanese broadcast system, improved image processing LSI unit, noise reduction digital amplifier and HDMI connectivity.
There aren’t much to go on with the basic Aquous D except its energy saver performance to achieve over 50 percent power reduction. The Sharp units are sensor-based displays to auto adjust backlit brightness, but unlike the Sony’s eco friendly Bravia, its auto shutdown function reads signal inputs instead of scanning the presence of audiences in the room.
All models are available in three colors from red, white to black, and are scheduled to be released in Japan on the 20th this month. The 32 inch model will be selling for 140,000 Yen ($ 1,556), while the 26 and 20 inch models are priced at 110,000 Yen ($ 1,230) and 90,000 Yen ($ 1007) respectively.

Rambus introduces 4.3Gbps mobile memory

It's not all just lawsuits and overinflated posturing for Rambus -- the prickly memory firm will later today demo what its calling the Mobile Memory Initiative, a 4.3Gbps phone-oriented variant of the XDR RAM used in the PS3 that requires just 100mV of power. That means companies can either build super-powerful phones that take advantage of a complete MMI system's estimated 17GBps throughput, or build cheaper devices that offer performance equivalent to today's memory with fewer MMI parts. Rambus won't say who it's working with to bring out MMI, but we're going to have to wait a bit before we all score cheap HD videophones -- the first products aren't scheduled to hit until early 2010.

Mac tidbits: 17-inch MacBook Pro shipping, new iMacs soon

Apple's new 17-inch MacBook Pro is shipping on schedule.(Credit: Apple) A couple of tidbits surfaced Friday related to Apple's current and future Mac lineup. First of all, the 17-inch MacBook Pro introduced at Macworld 2009 is now shipping, MacNN discovered. Apple is quoting a 7- to 10-day lead time for shipments from its online store, which means it won't arrive until February, but Apple had only promised to start shipping the notebook by the end of January. It doesn't seem to be available in Apple's retail stores yet; at least, it wasn't available at the downtown San Francisco store as of Friday. Secondly, AppleInsider reports that Apple resellers are being told to expect limited quantities of 24-inch iMacs in the coming weeks, which generally means that the current model is being phased out. There have been several signs that Apple is planning to tweak the iMac in the coming weeks, most recently via an analyst report suggesting Apple was weighing whether to use dual-core or quad-core processors in the new models.

Eurocom lays claim to Core i7-equipped Clevo D900F

Remember all those Clevo laptops revealed last month? While we're expecting more information at CeBIT 2009, those crazy Canadians at Eurocom have gone ahead and spilled the beans on the 17-inch D900F. As conjectured, the 11.9-pound behemoth's packing an equally-mighty Intel core i7 processor in 2.66, 2.93 and 3.2GHz varieties. It's also got three 500GB hard drives totaling 1.5TB of space, 8GB DDR3 RAM, an nvidia G280 GPU, and a Blu-ray burner. Launch date is May 1, although according to Notebook Reviews we shouldn't expect to get our hands on it until Q4 2009. No word on pricing, but we suspect this powerhouse is gonna burn a giant hole in our pockets from both the inside and out.
