Samsung SCH-M830

While perusing the Samsung booth for something fresh and fun we happened upon this, the Samsung SCH-M830. The M830 is a WiBro (mobile WiMax) and HSPA set, WiFI, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel camera, a 3.3-inch LCD, memory expansion with microSD, and runs Windows Mobile 6.1. The interface and all the UI elements were in Korean (see that Anycall branding? That's the hint) so if there were any special goodies in there we definitely didn't catch them. Impressions? It felt great and was really solid, but as to performance we can't add much there -- though just that big display had us smiling. Lovely gallery and a quick video flip-through follow the break.

Intel X25-M SSDs slowing down with extensive use?

Intel's X25-M SSD drives have certainly shown themselves more than capable enough in the usual tests andvarious configurations, but a long-term test report from the folks at PC Perspective is now casting a bit of doubt onto their long-term effectiveness and speediness. More specifically, they found that the sector remapping and wear-leveling algorithms that are designed to increase performance and extend the drives' lifespans were actually doing quite the opposite as the drive became increasingly fragmented after extensive use. Further complicating the matter, it seems that conventional defrag programs only make the situation worse, with the only sure way of resetting the drive's sector maps being a complete wipe of the drive. PC Perspective is quick to point out, however, that many users may well never notice the slowdown with light use, and they do have a few suggestions to minimize the problem until Intel devises a firmware fix, which is the only surefire solution.

Canon's latest cameras

Canon certainly isn't cutting any corners with its pre-PMA batch of digital cameras, and the folks at PhotographyBlog look to be doing their best to keep up with them all, with them now churning out some hands-on looks with just about all of 'em, plus a couple of Canon's new lenses for good measure. Those include the SX200 IS pictured above, which they describe as "bigger and chunkier" than its rival Panasonic DMC-TZ7, as well as the "sleek and sophisticated" A2100 IS, the "toy-camera-like" D10, and a number of other compact shooters that stay a bit closer to their predecessors in terms of appearance. Of particular note to more serious photographers, Canon was also showing off its new TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens, which is replacing the 17-year-old original model, and its new TS-E 17mm f/4L lens, which is apparently the world's shortest focal length Tilt-Shift lens with full-frame 35mm coverage. Hit up the link below to check out the whole lot, just be prepared to do a bit of digging.

Haier shows off mysterious "NetBooks," Android phones

Haier's offerings are always an adventure, and this year at MWC they didn't disappoint. They were showing off an interesting assortment of MIDs, confusingly dubbed "NetBooks," including a mini-laptop of sorts (left) that falls somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, we're totally short on specs, release dates or other sorts of relevant informations, so what you see is pretty much what you get. On a similar note, Haier had two Android-based devices at the show, dubbed the G1 and the G2, along with a BlackBerry 8900 look-alike we didn't see, and another phone that even the PR person wasn't sure what it was. These two "Googlephones" (their word) were sadly out of battery when we went for a demo, but one of them bore more than a passing resemblance to the BlackBerry Storm, though it happens to be lighter, smaller and runs a new OS... maybe RIM can call up Haier for some pointers.

Palm Pre no longer features data tethering on Sprint website

Sigh, we knew it was too good to be true -- data tethering has been removed from the Palm Pre's spec list on Sprint's site and replaced with a "connector" section. We don't know if Sprint's just trying to clean things up or if it muscled Palm into killing the feature in order to drive new Simply Everything + Mobile Broadbandsubscriptions, but we do know that we're having a hard time turning these frowns upside-down. Come on, Sprint, say you don't mean it, okay?

Sonar hopes to power social featurephones

As with any trade show, flashy, high-end products have a tendency to steal the lion's share of the spotlight at MWC -- but the fact is, featurephones still outsell traditional smartphones by an order of magnitude. Companies like INQ are betting the farm on the belief that today's ultra-connected generation of Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook users are ultimately going to pick fashionable, cheap, easy-to-use handsets over the complexity of an iPhone, G1, or Omnia. There's something to be said for that -- most people don't know the model of their own phone, after all, and have no interest in learning how to download and install an app, let alone learn an entire mobile operating system. Plus, for the youngest members of this profitable group, there's a lot of price sensitivity -- smartphones are typically out of reach.

If startup Sonar has its way, that's where its new platform comes in. The idea was to fundamentally rethink the way average consumers -- you know, the ones who are plugged into three, four, or fourteen social networks and don't know a G1 from a P1i -- use a phone to communicate, and they're ready to show off their efforts for the first time here at MWC. We had an opportunity to sit down with Sonar's founders this week for a tour of the system, and we're pretty stoked about what we saw.

OCZ Summit Series SSDs get boost from new Samsung MLC

Intel's X-25M SSD may be the current go-to drive for those primarily concerned with speed, but it looks like it could soon have some competition from OCZ's latest Summit Series drives, which get a significant boost from some new Samsung MLC memory, not to mention 64MB of on-board cache. According to PC Perspective, those additions show themselves the most in write speeds, which manage to top even the X-25M, although the Summit drive fell slightly behind when it came to read speed tests, prompting the site to still give the overall edge to the X-25M. PC Perspective does speculate, however, that, given OCZ's past track record, the drives (available in sizes up to 250GB) could come in significantly cheaper than Intel's offerings, which would make the X-25M a much harder sell even with its slight performance edge. Hit up the link below for the complete benchmarks and a peek inside the drive.

Acer smartphones

Acer Inc, the world's third-largest PC brand, entered the increasingly crowded smartphone market with the unveiling of its first eight models at the World Mobile Congress trade show in Barcelona.

"We are extremely serious entering this space," Aymar de Lencquesaing, the head of Acer's smartphone business, told a news conference, adding the company plans to break into the top five of smartphone makers in five years.

Acer is the latest in a string of companies to launch its own line of smartphones, with cross-town rival Asustek recently also announcing a tie-up with navigation device maker Garmin to sell co-branded mobile devices.

The company said that it expects the business -- its first foray into mobile phones -- to account for 10 percent of revenue by 2012, as lines between portable PCs and increasingly sophisticated mobile phones start to blur

Acer unveils eight smartphones

The smartphone market has become increasingly crowded in the last two years, with Apple, Research in Motion and HTC winning market share at the expense of top smartphone provider Nokia.

"We genuinely believe that we can be actually one of the top five. Over time I hope we can be better than top five," Lencquesaing said.

He said Acer was planning to invest in building up the business before it can turn profitable. "I think it's going to take us anywhere between three to five years," he said. "Being the size that we are gives us a fairly sizeable marketing budget. We understand that we need to spend, to create the awareness that Acer is not just a PC company."

Acer intends to develop the business by using its existing sales channels for laptops. It will also use its large scale to get lower prices for some components, Lencquesaing said.

Acer said all eight of its newly launched smartphones would use Microsoft's Windows software, but it was also looking at Google's Android system.

"There is a clear interest right now for Android devices, and we believe so too," he said. Acer expects the cheapest new models to retail for less than 49 euros ($62.70), helped by operator subsidies, while the most expensive models would retail for around 500 euros when not subsidised

"This is a step really showing to the market that they are not playing with one or two devices ... it looks like they are committed to try hard," said IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo.

The smartphone industry is expected to be one of the few bright spots in the tech sector in 2009, growing 10-20 percent even as the global financial crisis saps demand for tech buys and hurts the bottom line of many technology companies

However, many analysts point out that the sector is already crowded and new entrants may find it difficult to break into the smartphone supply chain.

"It will be quite tough for them to enter carriers' portfolios. They do not have brand awareness in terms of mobile," said IDC's Jeronimo.

"They will probably have a small portion of the market in 1-2 year's time, but it is a first good step," he said.

Lenovo 12-inch IdeaPad S20 Notebook

This one's nowhere near official just yet, but DigiTimes is reporting that Lenovo is set to expand its netbook line to include a 12-inch model in the form of the Atom-powered IdeaPad S20 (no doubt not too dissimilar to 10-inch S10 pictured above). While there's expectedly no word on complete details, DigiTimes does say that the netbookwould come equipped an Atom N280 processor and Intel's GN40 chipset, along with Windows XP, and cost about $586. It also says that since the 12-inch screen size falls outside of Intel's definition of a netbook, Lenovo would have to pay the full, non-preferential price for the Atom processor (about ten bucks more), although it's not clear if that's also been the case with something like the Dell Mini 12, which also pairs an Atom processor with a 12-inch screen.
